Introduction
The Toyota Camry has been America’s best-selling midsize sedan for 15 years straight. The 2023 Camry aims to continue that track record with refinements across the board. I spent a week testing the new Camry to see if it still sets the standard in its class.
Exterior Styling
Toyota has updated the Camry’s styling to be more aggressive and sporty. The large trapezoidal grille, slim headlights, and prominent side character lines give it a sleek, modern look. The rear end has new taillights that extend onto the trunk lid. Overall, it has a more upscale appearance than past Camrys. Toyota offers 18-inch alloy wheels and a rear spoiler on higher trim levels.
Interior Comfort and Ergonomics
Step inside the Camry and you’re greeted with a comfortable, spacious cabin. The front seats have long cushions for thigh support and extensive adjustability. Headroom and legroom are plentiful in both rows. Interior materials feature soft-touch surfaces across the dash, doors, and center console. Build quality feels solid. Controls are intuitive and easy to use while driving. The rear seats fold down to expand the trunk when needed.
Technology and Connectivity
Toyota has upped the Camry’s tech with the latest infotainment and connectivity. The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and integrated apps. Navigation and a 9-speaker JBL sound system are available. A WiFi hotspot, wireless charging, and Qi wireless device charging are also optional extras. The Camry offers contemporary tech that’s on par with or better than rivals.
Performance and Fuel Economy
The base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine makes 203 horsepower, which feels peppy around town. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. The available V6 packs a stronger 301 horsepower punch. All Camrys use regular unleaded gasoline. I averaged an excellent 33 mpg overall in the four-cylinder during my testing. This makes it one of the most efficient non-hybrid midsize sedans.
Ride Comfort and Handling
A comfortable ride has always been a Camry hallmark, and the 2023 model delivers. Impact harshness from rough roads and bumps is muted. Wind and road noise are also minimized inside the cabin. Yet the chassis feels well-controlled when you turn up the pace. Steering has appropriate weighting. Enthusiasts will appreciate the TRD performance variants.
Safety and Driver Aids
Every Camry comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense suite. This includes pre-collision warning/braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, auto high beams, and road sign assist. Blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alerts, and parking sensors are optional. Crash test ratings are excellent.
Pricing and Value Camry
pricing starts at around $25,000, which is very reasonable for a well-equipped midsize sedan. The XLE trim I tested stickered for $30,000 and adds the V6 engine, leather seats, navigation, and other niceties. Higher trim levels offer extra luxury. Overall the Camry provides strong value, especially considering Toyota’s reputation for quality, durability and resale value. The 2023 Toyota Camry remains the leader of the midsize sedan pack. Its balance of quality, comfort, efficiency, safety, and everyday usability is unmatched. The Camry deserves its spot atop the best-seller charts. Anyone seeking an affordable, dependable family sedan should test drive one.
